Amethyst Church Geode

A broad, steeply arched church geode with a wide-open crystal face, cut and stood upright so the whole cavity reads at a glance. A thick band of chunky pale crystal frames the opening in frosted white and silvery grey, deepening to soft smoky lilac through the centre where the points cluster most densely,  At around 225mm tall and 13.25kg it has genuine heft and presence without needing floor space, so it works beautifully on a hearth, sideboard, low shelf or reception desk.

Physical Properties

  • Composition: amethyst, the purple variety of silicon dioxide (SiO2)
  • Hardness: 7 on the Mohs scale
  • Crystal system: trigonal, forming six-sided points
  • Lustre: vitreous, bright across the crystal bed
  • Colour: frosted white and silver-grey through to smoky lilac, with cream agate banding

Geology & Formation

Amethyst geodes form inside gas bubbles trapped in ancient volcanic lava flows. As the rock cooled, silica-rich water worked its way into the hollow and crystals grew slowly inwards from the walls over millions of years, with traces of iron and natural radiation producing amethyst's purple tones. Brazil is the classic source for these tall arched "church" or "cathedral" forms, which are cut open and set upright to reveal the cavity.

About the Grade

This is a 3rd grade piece, so the colour sits in the pale, smoky end of the amethyst range rather than deep violet, with natural variation across the crystal bed. That is what makes a geode of this size and weight affordable, and the sparkle and sculptural shape still do all the heavy lifting.

Crystal Properties

Amethyst is traditionally associated with calm, clarity and protection. Geodes are often placed in a living room, bedroom or workspace as a grounding focal point, believed to quiet a busy mind, support restful sleep and settle the feel of a room. These are long-standing beliefs rather than proven medical facts.
