About Orthoceras

Orthoceras (meaning "straight horn") were marine cephalopods, distant relatives of today's squid and nautilus. They swam in ancient seas around 400 million years ago, using their chambered shells to control buoyancy. After they died, their shells settled into seabed sediment and were slowly fossilised, with minerals replacing the original shell to preserve every chamber in stone.
