Geology & Formation

Tektites form when a meteorite slams into the Earth. The impact throws out molten terrestrial debris which cools so rapidly as it falls that it freezes into natural glass. Libyan Desert Glass is found scattered across the sand sea of western Egypt and is dated to roughly 29 to 26 million years old. It is prized among collectors for its unusual clarity and pale yellow colour, and its most famous appearance is as the carved scarab at the centre of a pectoral found in Tutankhamun's tomb.
