Weardale Green Fluorite Specimen #3

A characterful green fluorite specimen from Diana Maria Mine in Frosterley, Weardale, County Durham. Two prominent cubic crystals draw the eye, with broad faces revealing deep green interiors against a surrounding cluster of smaller, green crystals.

The photographs show a beautiful contrast between reflective crystal faces, translucent edges and softly clouded areas. The irregular brown-grey matrix provides a natural backdrop. Viewed from different angles, the overlapping crystals create a sculptural arrangement with plenty of detail to explore, making this an appealing addition to a British mineral collection or a display shelf.

This specimen is UV reactive, offering another feature to explore under ultraviolet light.

Physical Properties

  • Mineral: fluorite, calcium fluoride (CaF₂).
  • Crystal system: cubic.
  • Hardness: 4 on the Mohs scale.
  • Colour: deep green interiors with paler green areas.
  • Appearance: prominent intergrown cubes, translucent sections and reflective faces alongside naturally textured surfaces.
  • Matrix: irregular brown-grey host rock with pale crystalline patches.
  • UV reactivity: reactive under ultraviolet light.

Geology & Formation

Fluorite forms when mineral-rich fluids deposit calcium fluoride in veins and cavities within rock. Its cubic crystal structure produces the distinctive block-like shapes visible in this specimen. Diana Maria Mine in Frosterley lies within the renowned Weardale mineral district in County Durham.

Crystal Properties

In crystal traditions, green fluorite is associated with balance, clarity and renewal. Some believe it may help with focus and encourage a sense of calm, making it a meaningful addition to a quiet workspace or meditation area. These associations are spiritual beliefs rather than scientifically established effects.
