The Geology
Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools rapidly, preventing the growth of mineral crystals. Its deep, mirror-like black colour comes from iron and magnesium content within the melt. Found near volcanic regions worldwide — including Mexico, Iceland, and the USA — obsidian has been prized by humans for thousands of years, used for cutting tools, ceremonial objects, and ornamental carvings across many ancient cultures.
