Geology: Fluorite (calcium fluoride, CaF₂) is a halide mineral that forms in hydrothermal veins, often alongside quartz, calcite, and metallic ore deposits. It is renowned for its extraordinary range of colours — including purple, green, blue, yellow, and colourless — caused by impurities, radiation exposure, and crystal lattice defects. Many specimens display striking colour zoning or banding within a single piece. Fluorite can be strongly fluorescent under UV light but not always, a property from which the word “fluorescence” is derived. Major sources include China, Mexico, South Africa, and the UK (notably Derbyshire Blue John).
