Geology & Formation

Natural citrine is rare; the vast majority of commercially available citrine — including this specimen — is produced by heat-treating amethyst, a process that mimics the natural oxidation of iron impurities within quartz that occurs deep in the earth. The source material is predominantly mined in Brazil, where large amethyst geodes form within basalt cavities. The accompanying calcite developed concurrently within the same hydrothermal environment, crystallising from calcium-rich fluids to create the pale matrix intergrown with the quartz points.
