Geology

Lepidolite is a lithium-rich phyllosilicate mineral belonging to the mica group. It forms in granitic pegmatites — coarse-grained igneous rocks that develop in the final stages of magma crystallisation, where lithium, rubidium, and other rare elements concentrate in sufficient quantities to form distinct mineral deposits. Its characteristic shimmer comes from its platy, sheet-like crystal structure, a defining feature of all mica minerals. The lilac to rose-purple colouration is caused by trace amounts of manganese within the crystal lattice. Lepidolite is also an important industrial source of lithium, used in the manufacture of batteries and ceramics.
