Raw Black Obsidian
This striking raw black obsidian features deep jet-black colouring, glossy glass-like surfaces and dramatic angular edges. Broad, smooth fracture faces contrast with rippled textures and rougher areas, catching the light and revealing the character of this volcanic glass. A substantial addition to a mineral collection or a bold natural accent for a display shelf.
Physical Properties
Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass, composed mainly of silica. Unlike crystalline minerals, it has an amorphous structure. It typically measures around 5–5.5 on the Mohs hardness scale and breaks with curved, shell-like fractures, visible here in the sweeping surfaces and sharp ridges.
Geology & Formation
Obsidian forms when silica-rich lava cools rapidly, leaving little time for crystals to develop. This rapid cooling creates its distinctive glassy texture. The glossy faces shown in the photographs are characteristic fracture surfaces, rather than evidence of polishing.
Properties
In crystal traditions, black obsidian is associated with grounding, protection and self-reflection. It is often chosen as a symbolic companion for meditation, setting intentions and exploring personal patterns. These associations are spiritual beliefs rather than scientifically established effects.
